A 6.4-magnitude earthquake has hit Indonesia’s Lombok island, killing at least 10 people and injuring 40.
The shallow, 7-kilometer-deep earthquake hit the popular tourist destination early Sunday, sending people into the streets and open fields to avoid collapsing buildings.
A spokesman for Indonesia’s Disaster Mitigation Agency said the death toll could climb as data gathering on the island continues.
The quake was also felt on the neighboring island of Bali.
Earthquakes are common in Indonesia because it sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, an arc of volcanoes and fault lines around the Pacific Basin.
