Bombing Hits Jakarta Bus Terminal

A suspected suicide bombing rocked a bus terminal in the Indonesian capital Jakarta, killing at least one policeman.

Police say the attacker was killed in the blast that also injured several people.

“Tonight, to Indonesian citizens and all of us who are here at the scene, I express very deep concern. A bomb explosion has occurred and for now it is believed to have been a suicide bombing,” Vice National Police Chief Syafruddin, who uses one name, told reporters.

The blast occured near Kampung Melayu terminal, a station serving minivans and busses, in a working class district of eastern Jakarta not popular among tourists or foreigners.

Video footage shows smoke rising from the scene and large numbers of police officers, some carrying casualties away from the scene. The area has been cordoned off.

East Jakarta police chief Andry Wibowo said the damage in the area was “pretty big”.
